Overview of MITRE, E111, and Summer 2008 Intern Opportunities

MITRE is a not-for-profit organization and we work on issues that are of
critical import to the country's national defense. Our (E111)
department's work portfolio includes programs/projects that deal
(generally) with providing capabilities for the Air Force and Joint
Services (Navy, Marine Corps, Army) for use in systems that are deployed
around the world ... our systems are currently in use in various
operational venues, supporting a number of missions ranging from
humanitarian relief, to homeland defense, to fighting the war on terror,
to supporting combat operations in places like Iraq and Afghanistan. As
one might imagine, these systems are constantly being assessed for their
performance and effectiveness, and MITRE plays a critical role in
helping to identify and guide system/software upgrades that can benefit
our operational users.

The following represents a sampling of the engineering tasks that staff
in our department typically perform:

- Work with operational end-users (or their representatives) to
understand their needs and the shortcomings of the systems they're
currently using

- Express user inputs in terms of tangible requirements
(specifications) that can be conveyed to contractors for implementation

- Serve as technical advisors to our Air Force program office
("acquisition experts") as they assess contractor proposals for best
approaches and value to the Government

- Guide contractor efforts as they implement capabilities that
are responsive to our specifications

- Collaborate continually with multiple stakeholders (users,
acquirers, contractors, testers) as systems (or systems upgrades) are
defined, placed on contract, developed, tested, and ultimately deployed

Given the broad-level tasks described above, there are a number of
activities that - depending on timing and specific needs of our work
program this summer - would represent opportunities available to Summer
Interns who are studying to earn degrees in Computer Science, Computer
Engineering, or Information Systems. In a typical scenario, a Summer
Intern would be assigned to a "task leader" and they would work with a
small number of E111 staff, performing one or more of the following:

- Research and assess a particular technology or product for
potential applicability to a given system requirement or challenge

- Work in a laboratory environment to install, support, assess,
and/or demonstrate delivered contractor and/or commercial off-the-shelf
products

- Contribute (as a member of a small development team) to
proof-of-concept prototyping efforts to define/refine tasking for our
defense contractors

- Consider new and innovative approaches to meeting requirements
and/or addressing shortcomings of existing systems

- Capture and communicate results/findings in briefings and/or
technical reports
